Gallery of modern art
The New Gallery was re-opened in 2011 after five years of closure and extensive renovation work. The collections show painting, sculpture and new media from the 19th to the 21st century. Particular attention is given to the acquisitions of the past documenta exhibitions. The highlights of the gallery include the paintings by Lovis Corinth and the installation "Joseph Beuys: Space in the New Gallery" with the famous "The pack", a VW bus with 24 sledges.
A museum building based on plans by the architect Heinrich von Dehn-Rotfelser (1825–1885), which was to accommodate the renowned collection of paintings of Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Cassel (reign 1730/51–1760), was built on the Schöne Aussicht overlooking the Karlsaue park between 1871 and 1877.
