Gallery of Old masters

in Wilhelmshöhe Castle

Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn, Der Segen Jacobs, 1656

In the collection, which focuses on the 16th and 17th centuries, masterpieces of German, Italian, French and Spanish painting are represented, including paintings by Albrecht Dürer and Titian.

However, most of the exhibits belong to Dutch painting. For example "The Judgement of Paris" by Frans Floris and "Guards in a Forest Clearing" by Jan Brueghel the Elder. With works such as "The Triumph of the Victor" by Peter Paul Rubens, portraits by Anton van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens' "The King Drinks", the three main representatives of Flemish painting are represented in the Kassel collection.

The collection includes the largest stock of works by Rembrandt in Germany, including the famous portrait of his wife Saskia, and his touching late work "Jacob's Blessing".
